As a kid I used to have nightmares fairly regularly to the point that I was afraid to go to sleep. As an adult I’ve stopped having chronic nightmares but every now and then I’ll still have a terribly disturbing dream.
Last night I dreamt that I was in the final stages of moving out of my apartment (it wasn’t actually any apartment I have ever lived in). My belongings that I hadn’t already moved where pushed up against the sides of the room, leaving the center mostly open. The room had lots of windows and air vents along the floor. The apartment was definitely old. From my vantage point in the living room I could also see the kitchen which was made extremely dirty by old food and unclean dishes strewn about.
In the dream I was trying to move the rest of my things from the apartment, but every time I walked towards to sides of the room huge, dirty rats would come spilling out of the windows and air vents and crawl all over my belongings. Terrified and completely grossed out I would move back towards the center of the room, for fear they would come running after me. Once I would get to the center of the room most of the rats would go back out the windows and in the vents, but when I would try again to touch my things the rats would come running back out in droves. They were crawling all over the kitchen too, which I could see from the living room. Amanda and Ricky were my in dream as well helping me, but once the rats started running all over the apartment they left and waited outside.
The dream felt like hours of me trying over and over again to get my left over furniture, clothes, and personal items, but to no avail. Every time I got near to them the rats would come back. I yelled and threw things at them in hopes of scaring them away, but nothing worked.
I don’t remember exactly how the dream ended, but I do recall being blamed for the rats by my landlord. He told me that my things were dirty and that’s why the rats infested my apartment. I also remember telling myself in the dream that even if the rats went away they had contaminated all of my belongings and I would have to throw them out or leave them behind anyway. There came a point when I realized I had to accept that I could take anything with me, all I owned had to be left in the apartment.
