When I was 16 I started going to shows with my best friend Amanda. Around the same time I became fairly certain that I wanted to be a music photo journalist. This obviously never came to fruition, but I spent a large portion of my high school years going to see my favorite bands and taking photographs of them in an attempt to hone my skills. I was very outgoing and found it easy to strike up conversations with the band members. A few years ago, musicians in the indie rock scene were much more accessible than they are now that the genre of music has exploded. With my photo pass in hand I traveled all around CT, NY, and PA to see live music and photograph. To this day I still don’t know how I convinced my parents to let me do this.
In May 2001 I went to philly to see Midtown, The Movielife, and Face to Face. Remember that tour? Yeah, of course when I look back on it now I have to laugh, but at the time that was quite the lineup. I snapped this photograph during Midtown’s set. This is Gabe. I remember being extremely excited about getting this shot. It won me a prize in my high school’s annual art show. I still think it’s pretty solid work for a junior in high school.
